Difference Between a Cobbler & a Crisp

Have you ever wondered the difference between a cobbler, crumble, and crisp?

A crumble and crisp are often interchangeable, but the actual difference is that crisp toppings contain oats that get crispier.

Cobblers are topped with a biscuit mixture while crumbles and crisps have a cereal or granola-like topping.

What You'll Need to Make a Cherry Strawberry Crisp

  • 1 pound dark, sweet cherries, pitted and halved
  • 2 pounds strawberries, quartered
  • 1 ½ cups light brown sugar, divided
  • 12 tablespoons (1 ½ sticks) chilled butter, cut into pats
  • 2 cups old fashioned oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped fine

How to Make a Cherry Strawberry Crisp

  • Preheat the oven to 400 F (200 C).
  • In a large cast-iron skillet or a 9-inch baking dish, combine the cherries, strawberries and ¾ cup of brown sugar. Mix to combine.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the remaining brown sugar, oats, butter, flour, and walnuts. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, combine until the mixture is in small pebbles.
  • Spread the topping evenly over the skillet of berries.
  • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, till the crumble top is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling.
