June 2017 Traffic & Income Report

Hi friends! I'm now 1 year and 7 months into my blogging journey! I fell off doing the traffic and income reports last summer for several reasons - an epic, transatlantic move that rocked my world and took up loads of time (I also fell off posting regularly for a few months) and a sense that I was saying the same thing month after month.
My husband and I have resettled in the US and bought a house and I've been in my new-ish job for 6-months. I've started to feel really settled. I'm tinkering with my blog again (outside of posting recipes) - paying attention to traffic and growth, building my Instagram, playing with usability on the home page, etc. So, I thought it would be a good time to take another crack at traffic and income reporting.
Even though I've taken a year off from writing my own reports, I still really enjoy reading traffic and income reports on other blogs. Here's why I think they're so useful:
- It encourages other bloggers to see areas for growth and insight into what I’ve found is working
- It encourages me to keep going as I see growth and exposes some areas I need to work on.
- It gives non-bloggers an interesting, behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run Shiny Happy Bright.

What made June special
I decided to go all in on growing Instagram and Twitter and I downloaded Crowdfire, which I'd heretofore found a little...silly. It seemed like a gimmicky way to grow, but I cannot deny that I saw a real jump in followers. I started using Crowdfire mid-month and in two weeks saw more growth than in the past 4 months. I've struggled with why I should care about building social media. Besides the obvious traffic boost that Pinterest and Facebook can provide (Instagram and Twitter are notoriously bad at leading to clicks), they help when pitching a media package to brands for sponsored content. That's something I care about, as I'd like to do sponsored posts in the future. As more people start to use ad blockers, I don't think traditional display ads are going to net bloggers much revenue.
Social Media Followers
As mentioned above, I saw a jump in Instagram and Twitter this month from using Crowdfire. I've seen the most growth on Pinterest, because I've been using Tailwind to schedule my pins for over a year. On Facebook, I use the in-platform scheduler and try to post 2 to 3 times a day (about 20% of my own content, 80% other bloggers - and I try to have a few videos a week as they seem to do the best).
I'm giving Twitter till the end of August to really grow. If it doesn't, I think I'll drop it as a platform I use regularly.
Traffic for June 2017
Hey, it's summer and my traffic reflects it! :) I had one major jump thanks to Yummly, but my traffic stayed pretty low otherwise. It's still almost double what it was last year though, so keeping everything in perspective, I'm quite pleased.
Top 10 Sources of Traffic
June 2017 saw a crazy spike in one recipe on Yummly, which I've barely gotten any traffic on in the last year. Weird, but appreciate! Pinterest continues to be my most stable traffic provider. I'm working on increasing Google traffic and after spending several hours auditing my site for SEO, I know I need to do better. My recipes are NOT optimized for Google, so I'll be working on that. I need to add nutrition content and find a way to create a recipe card in Squarespace.

This income went down a bit from the previous month, because I removed the ad that used to run along the bottom of the screen. I felt it cluttered my page too much and was especially intrusive on mobile. Unfortunately, it was the highest earning ad. In the end, I felt like user experience was more important.
Goals for July/August 2017
- Get two weeks ahead in my posting schedule. I'd like to get myself into a position where I'm not working on the coming week's content during the previous weekend. I find it stressful to not have a little cushion.
- Get a newsletter opt-in underway. This has been an ongoing desire, but keeping up with regular blog content has always gotten in the way. Now that it's summer and I have more light for shooting photos, I think it's time to get this done!
