If you're starting out in your first place or looking to do an inexpensive kitchen refresh, here's a list of what I consider essentials for the home cook's kitchen. I've scoured Amazon for good deals on highly rated items, and put together a list below of their prices and where you can buy them.
These are items for the starter kitchen and you may find yourself wanting to eventually upgrade, but it's a good idea to get the basics and then decide what's important for you to upgrade. Maybe it's a high end chef's knife or an Epicurean cutting board - but before you make that financial commitment - see if you can do with just the basics.
Here's a list of what you definitely need in a kitchen:
- A variety of sauce pans and stock pots, as well as a frying pan
- Knife set - chef's knife and paring knife must be included
- Spatulas & Spoons
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Can opener
- Vegetable Peeler
- Mixing Bowls
- Cutting Boards
- Baking Sheet
- Bread pan & muffin tin
- 9x13 pan
Does this include a fancy mixer? No, but you've got mixing bowls, a spoon, and ARM power (get stirring!) Does this include a blender, juicer, or food processor? No, hello knives and grater! Get chopping.
There's lots of other things I would recommend you purchase as time goes on (honestly, I really do love my food processor and fancy chef's knife - you can check out what I use in my shop), but I'll put those in another, upcoming list on outfitting your kitchen for under $500. Appliances can really add up, so you want to make sure you really will get good use out of them. For instance, I bought a juicer on a whim 3 years ago and I've used it 2 times. That was not a well thought through purchase!
Without further ado - here's where you can purchase the lovely items in the above graphic:
